It really is amazing that with a little creative thinking you can come up with some ingenious and surprising alternative uses for the everyday household items you have hanging about.
Here are our favourites:
Rubber gloves are great at picking up pet hair
Anyone who has a pet will know that pet hair is one of the few negatives and it can drive you mad if it gets all over your clothes. Slightly dampen a pair of rubber gloves and glide over the furniture and it will collect all the stray hairs.
Use an ice cube tray to freeze leftover herbs or stock
If you or the family Chef have prepared homemade stock it can be a great tip to freeze individual portions in the trusty old ice cube tray. This way you can use it when you need it and it never gets wasted.
The ice cube tray also works a treat for leftover fresh herbs. So, next time you need a sprinkling of coriander you’ll have them to hand and they only take seconds to defrost.
Simply chop them up and place inside each ice cube compartments with a dash of water to fill the gaps.
A new way to use the kitchen sponge
The kitchen sponge is a brilliant addition to any household as they are cheap, readily available and do a brilliant job at cleaning dishes.
Although it does have another equally brilliant use! It is also great for removing bobbling on jumpers. Use the rough side of a clean, dry sponge in gentle, small circular motions.
Use sandpaper to make shoes less slippery
Slippery shoes can lead to danger and a fair amount of embarrassment! However, by taking a little sandpaper to scuff up the bottoms you create traction and you’ve saved the day!
The simple cotton bud!
The simple cotton bud is a life saver when trying to clean all those nightmare tight spots.
They are also great for delicate work such as cleaning a computer keyboard.
Vinegar has many uses
You can mix one part vinegar with four parts water and pour onto sweat stains on clothing, soak for one minute and then wash as normal.
Vinegar is a great smell neutraliser. Just pour vinegar into a jug or bowl and leave it in the affected room for 30 minutes and all smells will be gone.
Vinegar can also loosen stickers that appear on nearly everything nowadays. For pesky stickers that won’t budge, soak a paper towel in vinegar and place over the sticker for about ten minutes. The vinegar will weaken the adhesive.
Vinegar and water are also brilliant at cleaning windows or mirrors.
Dryer sheets make the best duster
Television and PC screens attract dust quickly because they are electrically charged. Dryer sheets are designed to reduce static cling, so not only do they remove dust they will prevent it from resettling for several days.
The really good news is you can use them after they have been in the dryer as they are softer and therefore perfect for polishing glass screens.
