Then look no further than the role of a School Matron or Mistress! Many of you with children at boarding school will be aware of the highs and lows your children experience. The role of the modern Matron has changed dramatically over recent years, no longer the Hattie Jacques from the Carry On films or the terrifying lady who loomed in the dormitory door with a look that withered.
In our modern, holistic approach to life schools are now much more aware of the need for an excellent pastoral care system where the main role of a Matron is to be responsible for the welfare of the children in a job that involves performing the role of a kind of term-time mother. This involves the ‘whole’ child, both physical and mental. To get good academic results, children will only give their best in the classroom if they are happy, contented and well cared for which is why the role of Matron is so important within a boarding school.
The role, be it House Matron, Assistant Matron, House Parent/Mother is so varied there is absolutely no room for boredom. Although there are no specific qualifications required an enhanced DBS check is essential and First Aid qualification is highly desirable (the schools will often undertake this). Driving is also preferable as many of these schools are set in rolling countryside and they suggest you drive for your own sanity; it can also come in useful if children need taking to appointments. A can-do attitude, fun disposition, common sense and use of own initiative are important, but the most important quality is a warm, patient, understanding personality combined with a streak of professionalism and a seriously good sense of humour!
What kind of person would the children like as their Matron; someone who would take the time to listen, not just brush them off because they are too busy doing other things; children need to feel valued. A person who is fun, kind, understanding and the ability to instil discipline without being too strict… the children know what they want!
