Over the years, The Criterion theatre in London’s Piccadilly Circus has been a host to an array of restaurants - none of which had stood the test of time (despite such a busy central location).
Last April saw the popular Savini of Milan take up the mantle, for which I was invited to attend a complimentary three course dinner for their official opening of the café restaurant.
Upon arrival we were promptly attended to, coats taken, and guided to our comfortable booth in the centre of the opulent dining room. The grandeur of the décor, from the floor to ceiling marble pillars, gold embellished ceiling and impressive chandeliers, gave the whole experience a very luxurious feel. The service was professional and polished from start to finish.
Executive Chef Giovanni Bon served traditional Italian dishes but with a regional twist. I opted for my all-time favourite Aubergine parmigiana to start, followed by the Risotto with porcini mushrooms, taleggio cheese and black truffle, and finished off with a dessert of Pears poached in red wine filled with mascarpone, candied orange and almond. Divine.
I would definitely recommend as a pre-theatre treat (£££) or for a quiet family celebration as part of a group.
I have also heard it is popular for people to stop by in the evening just to indulge in cocktails at the bar!
